Cost of living in Providenciales
Last reviewed:
This guide looks at what affects take-home pay and costs in Providenciales using official sources and published government announcements, as reviewed on 13 October 2026. Use the linked price reports to research staple goods and confirm payroll deductions with the responsible bodies.
Currency and taxes
According to Invest Turks and Caicos, the government investment agency, the currency is the US dollar. Its published investment information states there are no direct personal, corporate, capital gains or inheritance taxes, and no exchange controls.
National Insurance contributions
NIB’s About Us page gives a private-sector contribution rate of 12% of insurable earnings and a self-employed rate of 10%. The NIB rate schedule published by Magnetic Media gives the private-sector split from 1 April 2024 as 6.5% employer and 5.5% employee. Insurable-earnings ceilings apply. A different rate applies to public officers; check with NIB.
National Health Insurance Plan
According to NHIP’s frequently asked questions, enrolment is mandatory for residents and the plan is funded through a payroll contribution of 6%, plus government transfers. Its billing page says the employer deducts the employee portion each month and pays it on or before the 14th. Confirm the employee and employer shares with NHIP.
A simple payroll example
For an illustrative private-sector gross salary of $3,000 per month, applying the NIB employee rate of 5.5% gives $165. This example assumes the full $3,000 is within applicable insurable-earnings ceilings. Part of the NHIP 6% contribution is also deducted from the employee’s pay; the employee share is not calculated here because the cited official source does not give the split. This example therefore does not calculate final take-home pay.
Minimum wage
A government press release reported by TCI Sun states that the minimum wage became US$8.00 per hour from 1 April 2023, with US$9.00 applying in security, manufacturing, construction, banking, financial services and insurance. The release says the previous increase took effect on 15 May 2015. Confirm the currently applicable rate with the official body.
Inflation and imported goods
The 2026/27 Budget Citizens’ Guide projects average domestic inflation of about 2.7%, reflecting higher import prices and supply-chain pressures. It describes the islands as small, open and import-dependent. This is a budget projection, rather than a measured price increase for an individual household.
Where to check staple food prices
The Department of Trade, Industry and Fair Competition publishes a monthly Breadbasket Price Report under the Consumer Protection Ordinance. It covers staple goods such as flour, rice, chicken and oil. See the June 2026 report and January 2026 highlights for published price information.
For questions about the reports, contact consumeraffairs@gov.tc. When comparing vacancies, also read the government salary guide and work permit guide.
